Screenbuddy

The app that manages your media for you.

This app allows users to manage their media diets with the help of tips, statistics, app restrictions, and friendly motivation. We created this app in order to help users who wish to cut back on screentime, but aren't sure how.

Duration: January 2021 - April 2021

January: Set a weekly meeting time, collaborated on ideas for an app and its features, as well as got to know our other team members.

February: Conducted research to better understand our how might we question.

March: Created our app’s name and brainstormed unique features to make for our app.

April: Worked as a team on our app’s journey map as well as flow diagrams in order to understand how the user will perceive our app’s features.

What I Did:

To contribute to the team project I made sure to show up to every meeting, brainstorm creative ideas, finish my portions of work on time, and help my teammates whenever they needed help.

Overview:

Problem:
Media consumes people's lives and it is difficult to change our screentime habits. Users feel as though they do not have the motivation to cut back or they simply do not know where to start.
Solution:
Screenbuddy allows users to inform themselves about their screentime and the effects of it, as well as provide a friendly influence for users to allocate their time away from their phones.

How might we design an app for technology that enables people who consume media to improve their management of the media they look at and the allocation of their time?

Personas and Infographic:

During research, it was discovered that most of our users are unaware of how long their screen time is. Despite this, users seem to be aware of what apps they use the most, which data shows to be social media and communication apps. Users want to reduce their screen time, but are not sure how to since there are not many other activities available, especially at this time. This informs our design to guide users to other activities away from screens, perhaps by providing recommendations. It guides the design to inform users how long their screen time is so they can be aware of how long they use their screens for. The data collected also informs the design to help users manage what apps they are going on.

Our users’ goals are to reduce screen time and manage their media diet, which means being aware of how long they are using screen time and what media they are consuming, as well as how this media affects the users. Users value how much time they spend using screens because this can be a poor allocation of time. Users also value managing media because what media is consumed can impact the mental wellbeing of users. The motivation of our users is improving how they spend their time and decreasing the negative mental impacts some media has on users.

  1. Most people are unaware of their screen time but are aware of which apps they use the most and why

  2.  The most common apps used are social media apps (ex. Instagram, Snapchat, tik tok)

  3. People want to cut back their screen time but are unsure of how to do so, especially during COVID

My motivation for this project comes from a personal want to cut back on screen time. I have always disliked that I feel so attached to my phone and I have always considered changing my habits, yet I never took any action. I feel that my own personal experience has allowed me to create unique ideas and stay motivated towards making an app designed for people similar to me.

Popular Polly- influencer, always on her phone specifically for social media, mid-teens to mid-20s, most likely earns money through social media (sponsored ads), prioritizes the way they are perceived by followers through social media, uses social media many times a day

Technical Tina- tech-savvy, smart, observant, stay updated on new technology, saves up for new devices/games, works in the tech industry, early 20’s to early 30’s, prioritizes being up to date on the new innovations and tech trends, uses social media every so often - cares about entertainment more (video games, youtube, twitch, etc.)

Oblivious Owen- unaware of how much he uses his phone, doesn't pay attention to his surroundings,  doesn’t care about screen time, mid-teens to mid 20’s - male, no job or have a part-time job, does not care about much, prioritizes partying and dating, does not use social media often

Pain Points:

  1. How to get to the theme and font pages

  2. No clear description of how the point system works

  3. User’s points not displayed

  4. No “forgot password?” button

  5. No redirection for failure to sign in

  6. Not a clear option for users to choose their own profile picture

  7. Only allows the choice of either an avatar or a profile picture, not both

  8. No way to get back to the account page

  9. The on/off button for app restrictions makes it harder for users to achieve their goal

  10. App restrictions do not show a time limit
